CHAPTER 26

Hunters dropped off the branches above, since there wasn’t a lot of room for them to fight in. The teams spread out but still kept a sort of formation with each other. Hunters were, by nature, constantly battling against each other for the limited resources available to them, but against this many monsters, it wasn’t about resources.

It was a battle of Hunters versus monsters. In instances like this, instinct pulled everyone together with one goal: to win.

Stronger teams stepped forward while weaker teams took the back row, as similar as they could to a Gate Surge formation. There wasn’t a designated leader, but we all knew enough to know what to do.

Unfortunately, we were outnumbered.

The whooping sounds grew louder as the monsters got closer.

A couple mages—Yellow included—threw their hands in the air and sent out emergency flares to call for backup. The colorful magic shot up, winding through the branches. Just before it touched the thick layer of leaves which covered the rainforest and dimmed the light, the magic hit an invisible barrier and exploded prematurely.

My lips parted in shock. How was there a barrier there? That shouldn’t be.

The mages gasped. Several of them stubbornly sent more emergency flares up, but none of them got through.

“What?” Yellow gasped, looking at her hand like it didn’t belong to her. “Where did that barrier come from?”

“If flares can’t get through,” Purple asked quietly, “do you think the transportation portal still works?”

A chill settled down my back. If that was the case, there was no backup coming even if we could get an emergency flare out.

I Mirrored my kindjal. “The barrier is probably connected to the Portal Burst.”

Kesstel said that each world fragment had a Boss. The barrier was probably connected to the Boss of the world fragment on the other side of the Portal Burst. If the barrier was ongoing, that most likely meant the portal had opened but hadn’t shut yet.

Just like with the red orcs that kidnapped me months ago.

My fingers tightened around the handles of my swords. “The barrier will disappear when the portal closes.” Or the Boss inside is dead. The S-ranked Boss.

I took a breath. For some reason, I wasn’t as scared as I thought I’d be. Maybe it was because I was stronger. Or maybe because I truly understood what was going on. Either way, there was no way out but going forward.

I walked to the side, away from the rainbow brigade, and commanded my mist to draw back and hover only ten feet around me. I didn’t want to disadvantage anyone else. Turning my head, I spoke over my shoulder. “You should stay out of my mist now. It’s about to get really thick.”

True to my word, the water vapor increased as I pulled in the rain that was ever falling around me. It was so thick, a normal person wouldn’t be able to see their hands in front of their face.

Perfect.

“Good luck,” I told them.

Monsters swarmed around the thick trees in front of us, finally giving an image that went with the horrible whooping echoing in the air.
